Spring Verdure (2021)
Verdure (ˈvərjər) can be defined as the vibrant green color associated with vegetation. Naturally, when we think about the spring-time, those luscious and lively shades of green are the first images that come to mind. Accompanying these vibrant greens, there are a multitude of other colors which we also associate with nature. Our beautiful sky colors can range from brilliant blues to warm and rich reds and oranges, all the way to dark twilight purples and blacks. Equally as important are the deep and murky browns we see in soil and swampy waters. Together, all these colors create an extremely diverse but natural palette, and while we might see most of them year-round, we don’t see that verdurous green until Spring.
Spring Verdure is about the overnight arrival of those most vibrant greens into nature. The piece begins extremely dense in texture with each of the colors overlapping with one another, as if the bright flourishes of spring-time are restrained and begging to be released, leaving us with a glimpse of what lies ahead. The lullaby to follow has a more ethereal quality, like mother nature is singing the life back into the grass and trees. One by one, the colors of spring begin to awake from their hibernation, until finally, we’re greeted by their massive symphonic flourishes.
The piece was almost entirely composed while the majority of the world was still quarantined due to the COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic. Most of us had never expected something so severe and drastic to affect our families and loved ones so quickly. With all of us locked in our homes, the new virtual lifestyle left much to be desired. Like many others, I personally yearned to go outdoors and experience the beautiful spring weather which was just starting to arrive. I developed a particular infatuation for bright spring-time imagery and wanted to do nothing else but write music about that which I was disconnected from. Three weeks later, the score for Spring Verdure was completed.
